The student bottleneck

Why the keyboard slows your grades down

You think faster than you type — and every essay, note and application email pays that gap. Three ways voice closes it:

Ideas evaporate at 40 wpm

The argument is clear in your head and gone by the time you’ve typed the first sentence. Speaking at ~150 words a minute captures the thought while it’s still whole.

Structure is the hard part

Genie 007 turns a spoken ramble into an outline: “structure this into an intro, three arguments and a conclusion” — then you write the essay in your own words from a real skeleton.

Genie Mode — structure on command; the thinking stays yours

Access is not optional

Dyslexia, RSI, a broken wrist in exam season — for many students voice isn’t productivity, it’s participation. One hotkey works in every site the course uses.

A study week, spoken

Dear Dr Osei — I’ve been unwell this week and I’m behind on the minimum wage essay. Could I have until Monday? I can send the outline now to show where it stands, and I’ll have the full draft to you by then.

Best overall — notes, structure and drafts from your voice, everywhere you study

Genie 007 covers the whole study loop. Voice Typing mode takes lecture notes and essay drafts at speaking speed with automatic punctuation, in Google Docs, your VLE, email and every site. Genie Mode adds the study tools: “structure this into an outline”, “summarise my notes”, “make flashcard questions” — scaffolding that leaves the actual thinking and writing to you. International students think in their own language and draft in polished English via live translation across 140+ languages. Audio is processed in real time and never stored; Genie 007 keeps no recordings and no transcripts.

Full disclosure: Genie 007 is our product. Claims about free tools are checked against their vendors’ own published pages.

The free tools, honestly — use them too

Google Docs voice typing

Free, decent, lives in Tools → Voice typing — with spoken punctuation commands and a Docs-only boundary. If your whole course runs on Docs and raw dictation is all you need, start here.

Your phone’s keyboard mic

Gboard and iPhone dictation are great for quick messages and voice memos on the bus. Nobody writes an essay on them.

Windows voice typing / Apple Dictation

Free desktop dictation into any field (Win+H, fn-fn). Raw transcripts, structure on you — a solid zero-cost fallback.

All of them type. None of them helps you study.

The bottom line

Why Genie 007 Is the Better Study Tool

Every student owns free dictation already — and most never use it, because raw transcription doesn’t map to student work. Notes need structure, essays need outlines, revision needs questions, and tutors need emails that don’t take forty minutes to word. Genie 007 fits the actual workflow: your voice goes in, and what comes out is the scaffolding — organised notes, a skeleton to write from, flashcards from your own material — while the arguments and the prose stay yours.

It follows you across everything a course touches: Docs, the VLE, email, group chats, on your laptop and phone. For international students it quietly removes the second-language tax — think in Urdu or Mandarin, draft in polished English. For students with dyslexia, RSI or an arm in a cast, it’s the difference between keeping up and falling behind.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best voice typing for students?

Google Docs voice typing is the best free start if your course lives in Docs. Genie 007 is the step up: dictation everywhere (Docs, VLE, email, every site) plus study commands — outlines, summaries, flashcards — from £3.33/month with a free trial and no card.

Is using voice typing cheating?

Dictation is just typing with your voice — universally fine. For AI structuring and summarising, follow your institution’s academic integrity rules: Genie builds scaffolding from your own words and materials, and the arguments, reading and final prose remain your work. When in doubt, check your course’s AI policy.

Can it take lecture notes for me?

It types your notes at speaking speed and structures them on command — speak the key points after (or during) the lecture and get an organised page. It’s a note-taking accelerator, not a recording-transcription service.

Does it help with essays without writing them for me?

That’s the design: “structure my idea into an outline” gives you a skeleton, dictation types your own sentences at 150 wpm, and “summarise my notes” preps revision. The essay is yours — the keyboard work isn’t.

I’m an international student — will it fix my English?

You can think out loud in your own language and get polished English on the page via live translation (140+ languages), or dictate English in your accent and get clean text. For graded work, use it within your course’s rules on language assistance.

What does it cost on a student budget?

Free to download with a free trial and no card. The annual plan is £3.33/month — founder pricing locked for life — which is less than one coffee a month for the whole degree.

Whether you're dictating lecture notes on your MacBook or iPad, the best dictation app for iPad ensures your study notes are formatted and ready to review.
