WhatsApp voice typing not working is nearly always a keyboard problem, not a WhatsApp one. The small mic on Gboard, Samsung Keyboard or the iPhone keyboard does the typing, so the fix sits in that keyboard’s voice typing switch, its microphone permission or the iPhone’s Enable Dictation setting. WhatsApp’s own mic button only records voice messages.
Quick fix:
- Tap the small mic on the keyboard, not the mic button beside the WhatsApp message box.
- Android: open Gboard settings, tap Voice typing and turn the switch on.
- Android: allow the mic for Gboard in Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone.
- iPhone: turn on Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Dictation.
- Restart the phone, open a chat and try the keyboard mic again.
Voice typing or voice message: which mic are you tapping?
WhatsApp shows two microphones, and they do different jobs. Many reports of WhatsApp voice typing not working are really this mix-up.
| Mic | Where it is | What you get | Controlled by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard mic (voice typing) | Top of Gboard, the Samsung Keyboard toolbar, bottom right on iPhone | Typed text you can edit | The keyboard’s settings and microphone permission |
| WhatsApp mic button | Next to the message box | An audio voice message | WhatsApp’s own microphone permission |
So you cannot enable voice typing in WhatsApp itself; there is no such switch in its settings. If you want to read voice notes as text instead, that is WhatsApp’s voice message transcripts feature, in Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts.
WhatsApp voice typing not working on Android and Gboard
Searches for “gboard voice typing not working whatsapp” usually mean one of two things: the mic is missing from the keyboard, or it appears but types nothing. Work through these in order.
- Check Gboard is in use. In Settings, search for “keyboard” and confirm Gboard is the default on-screen keyboard.
- Turn voice typing on. With the keyboard open, tap the Settings gear, then Voice typing, and switch on the main toggle (usually labelled Use voice typing). When it is off, the mic disappears.
- Give Gboard the microphone: Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone, then Allow only while using the app. If you went looking for a WhatsApp voice typing permission, this is the one that counts; WhatsApp’s own permission only covers voice messages and calls.
- Check the phone-wide switch: Settings > Security and privacy > Privacy > Privacy controls > Microphone access must be on (menu names vary by brand).
- Check the language. Google’s Gboard voice typing help notes that talk to text does not work in every language.
On a Pixel 6 or later, Gboard may use advanced voice typing. If it behaves oddly, turn off Advanced voice typing features under Settings > Voice typing and test again. Cache clearing and offline language packs are covered in our guide to voice to text not working on Android.
Samsung Keyboard: mic missing or voice input not starting
Samsung Keyboard can use Samsung voice input or Google voice typing. The usual cause of WhatsApp voice typing not working on a Galaxy is which of the two is selected.
- Open Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default. Turn on the voice input you want and the others off, so only one is active.
- Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input and choose Samsung voice input or Google voice typing.
- No mic at all? Search Settings for Samsung Keyboard and turn Keyboard toolbar back on.
- No signal? Under Offline voice input, tap Install offline language pack.
Samsung’s keyboard settings guide adds that Samsung voice input only works with Samsung Keyboard. On One UI 8, some owners found Google voice typing removed the mic from its usual key, and Samsung’s community moderators said there was no official fix at the time, so use the toolbar mic or switch back to Samsung voice input.
iPhone: Enable Dictation, the missing mic and Screen Time
On iPhone, voice typing is Apple’s Dictation, started from the mic at the bottom right of the keyboard. The first check for WhatsApp voice typing not working on iPhone is Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Dictation. If it is already on, turn it off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on.
WhatsApp keyboard mic missing on iPhone
- Screen Time can hide Dictation. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and turn on Siri & Dictation (labels vary slightly by iOS version). On a child’s iPhone, a parent may need to allow it.
- Tap the globe key to switch back to Apple’s keyboard; some third-party keyboards do not show the dictation key.
- Dictation is not offered in every language or region, so test in your main language first.
If Dictation works in Notes but not in WhatsApp, update WhatsApp and restart. For more, see our iPhone dictation not working fix list.
WhatsApp Web and Desktop: no voice typing button
On a computer, WhatsApp voice typing not working is expected: WhatsApp Web and the Windows and Mac apps have no keyboard mic, and their mic button records a voice message. Use the computer’s own tool instead.
- Windows: click in the message box, press Windows logo key + H, wait for “Listening…” and speak. Microsoft’s voice typing guide notes it needs internet. If nothing happens, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone.
- Mac: turn on System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, then press the Microphone key or the shortcut listed there. Press Escape to stop.
- Voice messages not recording: in Chrome, allow WhatsApp Web under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone.
The full workflow is in our guide to replying to WhatsApp by voice on desktop.
WhatsApp voice typing not working after all that? Last checks
This table lists every switch that can leave WhatsApp voice typing not working, so you can confirm none was missed.
| Device | Voice typing switch | Microphone or block check |
|---|---|---|
| Android (Gboard) | Gboard settings > Voice typing | Settings > Apps > Gboard > Permissions > Microphone |
| Samsung Galaxy | Samsung Keyboard settings > Voice input | Settings > General management > Keyboard list and default |
| iPhone | Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Dictation | Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps |
| Windows | Windows logo key + H | Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone |
| Mac | System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation | System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone |
Then try voice typing in another app. If it fails everywhere, suspect the keyboard or microphone: disconnect Bluetooth earbuds, update the keyboard app and restart. If it fails only in WhatsApp, update WhatsApp.
When voice typing works but replies still take too long
Getting the mic back fixes the input, not the effort. Plain voice typing still writes word for word, so you dictate every sentence and then soften anything too blunt for a client or the family group.
Genie 007 is voice to action rather than dictation, an approach we call think-to-text. Tell Genie 007 what you want done, not word by word. Say: “Tell Priya Thursday won’t work, offer Friday after four, and ask her to bring the contract.” Genie 007 understands the context and writes: “Hi Priya, Thursday won’t work for me, sorry. Could we do Friday after 4pm instead? And could you bring the contract along? Thanks!” Speak in English and it can write the reply in Spanish or Hindi; see voice translation for WhatsApp. It works inside WhatsApp on your phone and on WhatsApp Web, and it is private by design: nothing is stored.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is voice typing not working in WhatsApp?
WhatsApp voice typing not working is usually a keyboard problem, not a WhatsApp one: the keyboard’s voice typing switch is off, the keyboard app has no microphone permission, Dictation is off or blocked by Screen Time on iPhone, or you are pressing WhatsApp’s voice message button instead of the small mic on the keyboard.
How do I enable voice typing in WhatsApp?
There is no switch inside WhatsApp, because voice typing belongs to your keyboard: on Android turn on Voice typing in Gboard settings or pick a voice input in Samsung Keyboard settings, and on iPhone turn on Enable Dictation in Settings, General, Keyboard, then tap the mic on the keyboard in any chat.
Why is the microphone missing from my keyboard?
The keyboard microphone usually disappears when voice typing is switched off in the keyboard’s settings, when the Samsung Keyboard toolbar is hidden, when you have switched to a keyboard without a dictation key, or, on iPhone, when Siri and Dictation are blocked in Screen Time under Content and Privacy Restrictions, Allowed Apps.
Can I voice type on WhatsApp Web?
Yes, but not with a WhatsApp button, because WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps have no voice typing of their own: click in the message box and press the Windows logo key plus H on Windows, or turn on Dictation in System Settings, Keyboard on a Mac and press the Dictation shortcut, then speak.
Can WhatsApp turn voice messages into text?
Yes, WhatsApp can turn voice messages into text with its voice message transcripts feature, which you switch on in Settings, Chats, Voice message transcripts, or use on one message at a time by pressing and holding it and tapping transcribe, and WhatsApp says the transcripts are generated on your device.
