Voice to text Facebook Messenger works through your device, not through Messenger itself. On a phone, tap the microphone on the keyboard and speak. On a computer, use Windows voice typing (Windows logo key + H) or Mac Dictation inside facebook.com/messages, because Meta has retired the standalone desktop apps.
Voice to text Facebook Messenger on your phone
The message box in Messenger is an ordinary text field, so voice to text Facebook Messenger depends on your keyboard doing the listening. That is why searches for talk to text Facebook lead to the same place: the microphone key on your phone keyboard. Messenger receives the finished text and sends it like anything you typed, so you decide when it goes.
| Phone | How to start | If the microphone is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Android with Gboard | Tap the message box, then the Microphone icon at the top of the keyboard | Google’s steps assume Gboard is installed from the Play Store |
| iPhone | Tap the message box, then the microphone key on the keyboard | Settings > General > Keyboard, then turn on Enable Dictation |
Android
- Open a chat in Messenger and tap the message box.
- Tap the Microphone icon at the top of Gboard.
- When Speak now appears, say your message.
- Check the text, then tap send.
Google’s Gboard help says you can speak punctuation: Full stop, Comma, Exclamation mark, Question mark, New line and New paragraph. It adds that punctuation may not be available in every language, and that talk to text does not work with all languages.
iPhone
Tap the message box, tap the microphone key and speak. Apple renames settings between iOS versions, so if the path above differs on your phone, search Settings for Dictation. To dictate Messenger messages cleanly, speak in full sentences and read the text back before sending, because names are easy for dictation to mishear.
Voice typing in Messenger on desktop and facebook.com
Searches for Messenger speech to text desktop options run into a recent change. Meta shut down its standalone Messenger apps for Windows and Mac, and announced that messenger.com would stop working for messaging from April 2026, sending visitors to facebook.com/messages instead, as TechCrunch reported. People without a Facebook account can continue chats in the mobile app.
In practice, voice to text Facebook Messenger on a computer is a browser tab plus your operating system. Both Windows and macOS can type into any text box that has focus, including the Messenger chat box.
- Sign in at facebook.com/messages and open the chat.
- Click inside the message box so the cursor is blinking there.
- Start voice typing using the table below.
- Speak, read the text, then send it as usual.
| Computer | Start | Stop | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 or 10 | Press Windows logo key + H, then wait for Listening… | Say Stop listening, or press the microphone button on the voice typing menu | Needs an internet connection |
| Mac | Press the Microphone key if your Mac has one, use your Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation | Press Escape, the Microphone key or your shortcut | Turn it on first in System Settings > Keyboard |
Microsoft’s voice typing guide says it uses online speech recognition and describes spoken commands for punctuation. On a Mac, Apple’s Dictation guide says commas, full stops and question marks are added automatically in supported languages, and that Dictation stops by itself after 30 seconds of silence.
Voice messages vs voice typing in Messenger
A voice message is audio; voice typing is text. In the Messenger app, the microphone button beside the message box records a clip that the other person hears. The gesture has varied between app versions, so follow the on-screen prompts. On the web, a clip button may not appear for every account, so do not plan around it on desktop.
| Feature | Voice message | Voice typing |
|---|---|---|
| What the other person gets | An audio clip | Ordinary text |
| Best for | Tone, long explanations, hands full | Short replies, quiet places, anything they may skim |
| Where it works | The mobile app, and not always on the web | Any text box, on a phone or a computer |
For fully hands-free sending, Messenger’s features page lists Siri integration for starting calls or sending messages, so iPhone users can ask Siri instead of opening the app.
Voice to text Facebook Messenger not working: what to check
If voice to text Facebook Messenger stops working, work down this list, easiest first.
- Microphone permission. On Android, go to Settings > Apps, pick the app, then Permissions > Microphone and choose Allow only while using the app. Check Messenger for voice messages and your keyboard app for keyboard dictation. Menu names vary by phone. On iPhone, open Settings, select the app and check the Microphone switch.
- No microphone on the keyboard. Use the first table: the Android steps use Gboard, and another keyboard app has its own microphone key, while on iPhone Enable Dictation must be on.
- Language. Dictation does not cover every language, so try a supported one, or switch your keyboard language.
- Cursor not in the box (computer). Click into the message box first. On Windows, wait for the Listening alert, and check your internet connection.
- Voice Control on a Mac. Apple says standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on, so turn it off in System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
- Blocked in the browser. If a site or extension needs your microphone, in Chrome go to More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone and allow it.
Many of these fixes match our guide to WhatsApp voice typing not working, because both rely on the same keyboard microphone. More are in our voice typing guides.
A faster way: tell Genie 007 what to send
Built-in voice typing has a ceiling. It writes down what you say, so you still compose every reply aloud, word by word, and tidy the result yourself. With a busy inbox of customers, Marketplace buyers or friends, that is a lot of talking.
Genie 007 works from the order, not the wording. Say what you want done and it writes the finished reply in your tone. In facebook.com/messages with the browser extension, you might say: “Reply to Priya, thanks for the lift on Saturday, I can’t do Sunday, offer Tuesday evening.” Genie 007 understands the context and writes: “Hi Priya, thanks so much for the lift on Saturday! Sunday doesn’t work for me, but could we do Tuesday evening instead?” Review it, then send.
Voice typing mode is there when you only want dictation, with automatic punctuation and grammar, so you never say “comma”. Live translation lets you speak one language and send text in another, across 140+ languages; our guide to voice translation in WhatsApp shows the workflow, and the same idea works for voice to text Facebook Messenger replies to overseas buyers. It handles Instagram DMs by voice too. It is private by design and nothing is stored. New to the idea? Read what think-to-text means.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use talk to text on Facebook Messenger?
Tap the message box in a Messenger chat, tap the microphone on your keyboard, which is the Microphone icon on Gboard for Android or the microphone key on an iPhone keyboard, speak your message, check the text, and then tap send like any typed message.
Can I voice type in Messenger on my computer?
Yes, because Messenger on a computer is a web page at facebook.com/messages, so click the message box and press Windows logo key plus H on Windows, or use your Dictation shortcut on a Mac after turning Dictation on in System Settings under Keyboard.
Why is talk to text not working in Messenger?
The usual causes are a blocked microphone permission, a keyboard with no microphone key because Gboard is missing or iPhone Dictation is off, an unsupported language, or, on a computer, a cursor outside the message box or a Mac with Voice Control switched on.
Is there a Messenger desktop app for Windows or Mac?
No, Meta has shut down its standalone Messenger apps for Windows and Mac and now sends computer users to facebook.com/messages in a browser, where Windows voice typing or Mac Dictation still works, while the Messenger mobile apps for Android and iOS carry on.
Can I send a Messenger message with Siri?
Yes, because Messenger’s own features page lists Siri integration for starting calls or sending messages hands-free, so on an iPhone you can ask Siri to send a Messenger message to a contact without opening the app or typing anything yourself.
