Claude dictation not working is usually a permission, a setting or an out-of-date app, not a broken microphone. Restart Claude, allow microphone and Speech Recognition access, and install the latest version. On a Mac, the Caps Lock dictation shortcut is off by default, so switch it on in Claude Desktop settings first.
Quick fix: Claude dictation not working
- Quit Claude completely, not just the window, then open it again and retry.
- Check that your device lets Claude use the microphone (on a Mac, also Speech Recognition).
- Install the latest Claude Desktop from claude.com/download, or update the phone app.
- On a Mac, turn on the voice shortcut in Claude Desktop settings.
- Test claude.ai in your browser. If dictation works there, the problem is in the desktop app.
Claude Desktop dictation not working on a Mac
Claude Desktop dictation on a Mac is part of quick entry. Anthropic’s Help Center article Use quick entry with Claude Desktop on Mac says to press Caps Lock to dictate your message with real-time transcription, then press it again to stop and click the arrow to send. The article also says the voice shortcut is disabled by default because it takes over your Caps Lock key.
If Claude Desktop dictation is not working on your Mac, check these in order.
- Turn the shortcut on. Anthropic’s page gives two paths for the voice shortcut. The setup steps say to manage it in Settings > General, under Desktop app. The customising section says to use the Voice shortcut dropdown in Settings > Desktop app, or Settings > System under This computer in the older layout. If one path is missing in your version, try the other.
- Check the macOS version. The article says voice dictation needs macOS 14 or later, while the other quick entry features need macOS 12 or later.
- Allow Speech Recognition. The article lists speech recognition as required for voice dictation on macOS 14 and later, and says you can review it in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Check the dropdown. It offers Caps Lock, a custom shortcut or disabled, so make sure it is not set to disabled.
For Mac-wide settings, see dictation not working on Mac.
Claude dictation not working on Windows
Anthropic has no Windows help page that matches the Mac quick entry article. Its Claude Academy guide to the desktop app says speaking with Caps Lock is Mac only, and that on Windows a keyboard shortcut brings up Claude, which you set yourself in Settings. It does not name a default key.
The one Windows setting worth checking is Microsoft’s microphone privacy switch. Microsoft’s page on camera, microphone and privacy says that on Windows 11 you go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. It lists three toggles: Microphone access, Let apps access your microphone and Let desktop apps access your microphone. On Windows 10 the path is Settings > Privacy > Microphone.

Dictation works once, then stops
Several users report that Claude dictation works once and then fails. One GitHub report, issue 90741, describes Claude Desktop on Windows, where the first dictation after launch works and later attempts in the same session do not. The reporter says a full restart of the computer did not help. It was closed as not planned, so treat it as a user report, not Anthropic’s word.
A Mac report, issue 40197, describes the Cmd+D voice shortcut working for the first message and then doing nothing. Neither report offers a workaround, so stick to the safe steps.
- Quit Claude fully and reopen it. Expect one working dictation at best if the bug applies to you.
- Install the latest version from claude.com/download, then retry.
- If it still fails, dictate with a different tool for now (see below) and try Claude’s own button again after the next update.
Claude voice mode not working or not showing
Claude voice mode not working on a phone is a different feature from dictation. Anthropic’s voice mode help page says to tap the voice mode icon, the sound wave symbol next to the microphone icon in the text input field, then choose a voice. On the web and in Claude Desktop, you tap the sound wave symbol in the lower right corner of a new chat.
If the voice mode icon is not showing, start where Anthropic’s page says to look. For voice settings on web and desktop, go to Settings > Capabilities and find Voice. If Voice is not there, check Settings > General. The page describes voice mode as a beta feature available to all plans, so a missing icon is more likely an old app version or a different screen than a plan limit.
If voice mode is not available or Claude does not hear you, Anthropic suggests these checks.
- Use a reasonably quiet place, or switch to push-to-talk mode.
- Check that your device’s microphone permissions are enabled for Claude.
- For choppy audio, use a stable internet connection and close resource-heavy apps.

Claude Code voice mode not available
Claude Code voice mode not available is a separate problem from Claude Desktop, because Claude Code dictation runs in the terminal with its own /voice command. For the full setup and fixes, read our guide to voice dictation for Claude Code.
When Claude’s own dictation keeps failing
If Claude’s button keeps failing, you do not have to wait for a fix. Both major systems have a free route that types into whatever box has your cursor.
Windows: Win + H
Microsoft’s voice typing guide says to press the Windows logo key + H on a hardware keyboard. You need an internet connection and a working microphone, with your cursor in a text box. Similar fixes apply in Copilot dictation not working and ChatGPT voice dictation not working.
Mac: Apple Dictation
Apple’s Dictate messages and documents on Mac guide says to open System Settings, select Keyboard and turn on Dictation. Place the cursor where you want the text, then press the Microphone key, use your Dictation shortcut, or choose Edit > Start Dictation.
Genie 007 on Windows and Mac
Both free routes give you a transcript, and you still say every word. That is what think-to-text is built to get past.
The Genie 007 desktop app for Windows and Mac types where your cursor is, so it works in the Claude Desktop app and on claude.ai. Click into the Claude message box, then use one of two keys.
- Press Q (or any key or combination you choose), say what you want, and Genie writes the prompt or reply for you. It understands the context of where you are working.
- Press X (or any key or combination you choose) to type what you said, with filler words taken out and punctuation and grammar added.
For example, press Q and say: “Ask Claude to summarise this contract in five bullet points and flag anything about termination.” The finished prompt appears in the box. More guides are in our voice typing guides.
Still not working
If Claude’s voice to text is still not working, test dictation in a plain text box outside Claude. If that fails too, fix the microphone or system settings first. If it works everywhere except Claude, update the app and try claude.ai in the browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Claude dictation not working?
The usual causes are microphone or Speech Recognition permission switched off, an out-of-date app, or the Mac voice shortcut still disabled, which is its default. Restart Claude, check your device’s microphone permissions, and install the latest version. Some users also report dictation working once per session, then stopping.
How do I turn on dictation in Claude Desktop?
On a Mac, turn on the voice shortcut in Claude Desktop settings, then press Caps Lock to start and again to stop. Anthropic says it needs macOS 14 or later and Speech Recognition permission. Its help page gives the path as Settings > General under Desktop app, or the Voice shortcut dropdown in Settings > Desktop app.
Why is Claude voice mode not showing?
Check Settings > Capabilities for Voice, and if it is missing, Settings > General. On a phone, look for the sound wave icon beside the microphone in the text box. Anthropic describes voice mode as a beta feature for all plans, so an old app version is a likelier cause than your plan.
What is the Claude dictation shortcut?
On Claude Desktop for Mac, the voice dictation shortcut is Caps Lock once you enable it in settings. Press it to start and again to stop. Anthropic’s Claude Academy says that on Windows, a keyboard shortcut brings up Claude and you set it yourself in Settings, without naming a default key.
Is there a free alternative if Claude dictation keeps failing?
Yes. On Windows, press the Windows logo key + H with your cursor in a text box. On a Mac, turn on Dictation in System Settings > Keyboard, then use your Dictation shortcut or Edit > Start Dictation. Both type into whatever box has your cursor, including the Claude message box.
If you also use Google’s assistant, see the fixes for Gemini dictation not working in the browser, on phones and on Mac.
Try Genie 007 Free
When Claude’s own dictation lets you down, Genie 007 types at your cursor in the Claude Desktop app or on claude.ai. Press Q, say what you want, and it writes the prompt or reply for you.
Request access to the desktop app from the Windows or Mac page and try it on your next Claude chat. Genie 007 works on Windows and Mac.
