Claude Cowork voice input today means dictation: you speak, and Claude turns your words into text in the message box. Two-way voice mode, where Claude talks back, is not in Cowork. Anthropic’s help says that in Claude Cowork and Claude Code “dictation is available but voice mode isn’t.”
Claude Cowork Voice Input: What You Get Today
Cowork is the agent mode in Claude Desktop. Anthropic describes it as using “the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required”, and it is “available on paid plans (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise)”. You start a task by finding the message box, selecting “Cowork” and describing what you want done.
Anthropic’s voice page defines the one voice feature you do get: “Dictation converts your speech to text so you can type prompts by speaking.” That is Claude Cowork dictation in one line, and it is the only built-in Claude Cowork voice to text route: your speech becomes typed words, you read them, then you send.
What you do not get is a spoken reply. Cowork answers in text, and the longer replies, file changes and task steps all appear on screen.
Does Claude Cowork Have Voice Mode?
No. If you are asking whether Claude Cowork has voice mode, the answer from Anthropic’s own help is that voice mode is not available in Cowork. The sentence is on the page called Use voice mode: “In Claude Cowork and Claude Code, dictation is available but voice mode isn’t.”
Voice mode itself is a separate feature in regular chat. The same page calls it “a beta feature available to all plans” and says it is available “on Claude Mobile (iOS and Android), Claude Desktop, and the web, but is built to work best from your phone.” It also warns that “Voice conversations count toward your regular usage limits based on your subscription plan.”
A user report on GitHub asks for exactly this gap to be closed: “I’d love to have two-way voice mode (talk and hear Claude reply) in Cowork sessions, not just dictation.” The same report notes “Right now Cowork only offers dictation, so Claude’s replies are text-only.”
How to Dictate a Cowork Task on Mac: the Caps Lock Shortcut
On a Mac, Claude Desktop has a voice shortcut. Anthropic’s page Use quick entry with Claude Desktop on Mac says: “Press Caps Lock to dictate your message to Claude with real-time transcription.” This is the cowork caps lock dictation route.
It is off until you switch it on. The page says: “The voice dictation shortcut is disabled by default because it takes over your Caps Lock key.” To set it up:
- Check the box for “Turn on shortcut” in the voice dictation prompt.
- Press Caps Lock once to start dictating.
- Speak your message and watch the words appear as you talk.
- Press Caps Lock again when you are finished speaking.
- Click the arrow to send your transcribed message to Claude.
Later you manage it in Settings > Desktop app. The Voice shortcut dropdown offers three choices: “Enable Caps Lock for voice input”, “Set a custom keyboard shortcut” or “Disable the shortcut entirely”.
The requirements are on the same page: “macOS 14 or later for voice dictation”, plus the Speech recognition permission, which is “Required for voice dictation (macOS 14+ only)”. You can change permissions in System Settings > Privacy & Security. Anthropic also says “The transcribed text is sent to Claude as part of your message, just like any other text input.”
Claude Cowork Dictation Not Working? Checks in Order
If Claude Cowork voice input does nothing or cuts out, work through these checks from the quickest to the slowest.
- Open Settings > Desktop app and make sure the Voice shortcut is not set to “Disable the shortcut entirely”.
- Confirm the shortcut was turned on at all, because it is “disabled by default”.
- In System Settings > Privacy & Security, allow the microphone and Speech recognition for Claude, and check you are on macOS 14 or later.
- Keep Claude Desktop running: Anthropic says it “needs to be running on your Mac, but it can run in the background”.
- If you are on Windows, stop looking for a Caps Lock shortcut, because quick entry is Mac only.
Anthropic’s voice page gives the general microphone check too: “Check that your device’s microphone permissions are enabled for Claude.”
One more case has no official fix. A user report on GitHub describes Cowork dictation that “cuts off roughly 2 seconds after I start speaking, even while I’m still talking”, while “Dictation in the regular Claude chat box works perfectly on the same machine”. The report began on macOS Tahoe 26.4.1 after a Claude Desktop update. Treat it as a user report, not a confirmed Anthropic bug. For more on the chat side, see our guide to Claude dictation not working.
Cowork on Windows: No Caps Lock Shortcut, So Use a Dictation Tool
Cowork is on Windows too, since Claude Desktop runs on “macOS, Windows, and Linux (beta)”. The voice shortcut is the part that is missing. Anthropic’s quick entry page says: “Quick entry is currently only available for macOS users”, and “Windows users can still access Claude Desktop, but without the quick entry features.”
Anthropic’s pages describe no Windows shortcut for Cowork dictation. The practical options are typing, Windows’ own voice typing, or a dictation tool that types where your cursor is. Our Windows page covers the last of these, and the guide to dictating to Claude covers the chat box.
Plain dictation has a limit here. A Cowork task is usually a long brief, and every word still has to come out of your mouth in the right order.
Talk a Whole Task Into Cowork With Genie 007 (Windows and Mac)
Genie 007 is our app. It types where your cursor is in any app, on Windows and Mac, so the Cowork message box is just another place to talk into.
The step beyond plain transcription is what we call think-to-text: you give the order, not every word. A Cowork task is a good fit. Instead of dictating a paragraph, you can say “tidy the files in this folder, group them by client, and tell me what you moved”, then review it before it runs.
A workflow that helps: click into the Cowork box, talk the task through once, then read it as a brief before you send. You stay in charge of what Cowork does, because it is your message that starts the work. If you want the wider picture across tools, the voice typing guides list the apps we cover.
Cowork vs Claude Code vs Claude Chat: Where Voice Works
Here is where each voice feature sits, taken from Anthropic’s voice page. Claude Code has its own page in our series: voice dictation for Claude Code.
| Where | Dictation | Two-way voice mode |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Cowork | Available | Not available |
| Claude Code | Available | Not available |
| Claude chat (mobile, Desktop, web) | Available | Available in beta, best from your phone |
The chat row is the only one with spoken replies. If you want to talk back and forth with Claude, use chat, and switch to Cowork when you want the work done.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Claude Cowork have voice mode?
No. Anthropic’s help says “In Claude Cowork and Claude Code, dictation is available but voice mode isn’t.” You can speak to type your prompt, but Claude replies in text. Two-way voice mode is only in regular Claude chat, where it is a beta feature built to work best from your phone.
Can I dictate to Claude Cowork on Windows?
Anthropic’s pages describe the Caps Lock dictation shortcut for Mac only, and say “Windows users can still access Claude Desktop, but without the quick entry features.” On Windows, use a dictation tool that types where your cursor is, such as Genie 007, to talk into the Cowork message box.
Why does Cowork dictation stop after a few seconds?
Check the Voice shortcut in Settings > Desktop app, the microphone and Speech recognition permissions, and that Claude Desktop is running. A user report on GitHub describes dictation cutting off about 2 seconds in on macOS Tahoe 26.4.1, with no official fix in that thread.
Which Claude plans include Cowork?
Anthropic says “Claude Cowork is available on paid plans (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, and Enterprise).” The Free plan is not on that list.
