Gemini dictation not working is usually a microphone permission, a focus problem or a language setting, not a broken feature. Allow the microphone for your browser or the Google app, put the cursor in the prompt box before you tap the mic, close other apps using the microphone, check the language, then sign in again on a stable connection.
Gemini Dictation Not Working? Quick Fixes in Order
Do these five in order.
- Microphone permission. Allow the microphone for your browser (Chrome, Edge or Safari) or for the Google app on your phone.
- Cursor first. Click or tap inside the Gemini prompt box, then tap the microphone.
- One app at a time. Close any call, recording or tab that is already using the microphone.
- Language. The Gemini web app follows your browser or device language, so check that if it types the wrong words.
- Sign in and connection. Sign out and back in to your Google Account on a stable connection.
- Open the path for your browser, make sure gemini.google.com is not blocked, and leave the default on ask.
- Reload the Gemini tab, click in the prompt box, tap the mic and choose Allow when the browser asks.
- Check the operating system switch too: Microsoft’s camera, microphone and privacy page gives Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone; on a Mac it is System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Pause and resume instead of starting over: “To pause, tap Stop.” and “To resume, tap Microphone.” Your text so far stays in the box.
- Close every other app or tab that uses the microphone: calls, voice notes, a meeting tab in the background.
- Check the input device in your sound settings. A Bluetooth headset that keeps reconnecting will cut dictation with it.
- Dictate in shorter runs and tap Send between them.
- Open Settings > Apps, find the Google app, open its permissions and allow Microphone. Phone makers name these menus differently, and Google’s page does not give this step.
- If Gemini is listed as its own app, allow the microphone there too.
- Opening it by voice? Google’s tip: “If “Hey Google” doesn’t work, check if “Hey Google” & Voice Match are turned on.”
- Mind the five-minute window: tap Stop to pause and Microphone to resume.
- Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone: switch on Gemini, and the Google app if you use Gemini inside it.
- If Gemini is missing from the list, open Gemini and tap the mic; iOS may then ask for permission.
- Test once with the phone’s own microphone, AirPods out.
- The requirements. Google lists “A Mac running macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later with Apple Silicon, 8 GB of RAM or more”.
- Connection and account. “A stable internet connection is required to use Gemini’s features.” You also need a personal Google Account, or a work or school account where the administrator has enabled Gemini.
- The shortcut was changed. Go to Gemini menu > Settings > Speak to Window and check the “Tap to speak keyboard shortcut” and “Hold while speaking keyboard shortcut” settings.
- Microphone permission. Google’s page says nothing about it, so use Apple’s path: Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone, then turn access on for Gemini (Apple’s page).
- Instruction or dictation? With “Use reasoning” on, “Gemini will try to recognize whether you are giving Gemini instructions or want to dictate text.” Say the words you want typed, not an order.
- Stuck session. Press ESC or click Close, then try again.
- On a computer, change the browser’s language to the one you speak and reload.
- On a phone, change the device language, then reopen the app.
- On a Mac, Speak to Window is English only for now, per Google’s announcement above.
If those did not fix it, go to the section for your device below. Every step comes from Google’s own help pages or the browser and operating system makers.
Gemini Voice Input Not Working on the Web: Microphone Permission in Chrome, Edge and Safari
Google’s Gemini help pages give no microphone troubleshooting for the web app, so the fix for Gemini voice input not working on the web comes from the browser makers. It lives in the browser, which asked for microphone permission the first time you tapped the mic; if that was dismissed or blocked, the icon does nothing.
| Browser | Where the microphone permission lives |
|---|---|
| Chrome | More > Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Microphone (Google’s Chrome help) |
| Edge | Settings and more > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Microphone (Microsoft’s Edge privacy page) |
| Safari | Safari > Settings > Websites, or the Page menu button in the Smart Search field, then Website Settings (Apple’s Safari guide) |

Gemini Voice Input Ends Too Fast or Cuts Off Mid-Sentence
Google publishes no cause for this, so this article will not invent one. What it does publish is a limit: on the phone app, “The microphone stays open for up to 5 minutes to listen to your prompt.” No limit is stated for the web app.
Gemini Dictation Not Working on Android: The Google App Owns the Microphone
Google’s Get started with the Gemini mobile app page keeps Android short: “On your Gemini mobile app, tap Microphone.” “Say your question or prompt.” “To share your prompt with Gemini, tap Send.” It does not spell out the permission. The general Android path is to allow the microphone for the Google app in your phone’s app permissions, because Gemini on Android runs through the Google app.
Gemini Microphone Not Working on iPhone
The iPhone version of Google’s page says to tap Microphone and that “the microphone will stay open for up to 5 minutes, listening to your prompt.” It says nothing about the permission, so the path comes from Apple’s If the microphones on your iPhone aren’t working page: “Go to Settings.” “Tap Privacy & Security.” “Tap Microphone, then make sure the app is enabled.”
Gemini for Mac: Speak to Window (fn) Does Nothing
Gemini Speak to Window is the Mac app’s system-wide dictation. Google’s Use the Gemini app on Mac page says: “To use Speak to Window, press and hold the fn key.” “When you release fn, your query is submitted.” “You can also tap fn twice”. Gemini “will lightly clean up your words, like removing any “Um” sounds, and drop the text at your cursor.” Google’s announcement of 29 July 2026 says it works “in English, with more languages coming soon”.
When holding fn does nothing, check these.

Gemini Dictation Language: Why It Types in the Wrong Language
There is no Gemini dictation language switch inside the web app. Google’s Change Gemini’s language page says: “The Gemini web app uses the language set in your browser or device language settings.” and “It also affects the languages that you can talk to Gemini in”. If your browser is set to English and you dictate in Spanish, Gemini voice to text not working is really Gemini listening in the wrong language.
One caveat from the same page: “Some features in Gemini Apps, like Gemini’s voice setting, aren’t available in all languages.” Google lists no voice input languages, so yours may not be covered yet.
Gemini Live Is a Conversation, Not Dictation
Google describes Live this way: “With Gemini Live, you can have a natural, free-flowing conversation with Gemini.” and “Talk to Gemini without typing, and Gemini will respond back verbally.” If you want your words as text in the prompt box, use the microphone button, not Live.
When Gemini Still Will Not Type: Genie 007 Types Into Gemini on Windows, Mac and Phone
Gemini’s own microphone has limits: it only listens inside Gemini, the phone app stops after five minutes, Speak to Window is English only and Mac only, and everything depends on the browser permission.
Genie 007 types where the cursor is in any app, so it types straight into the Gemini prompt box in Chrome, Edge or Safari on Windows and Mac, and on your phone through the mobile app. It never needs Gemini’s microphone. Press Q (or any key or combination you choose) and say what you want: Genie writes the finished thing from what you meant. Say “compare these two laptops for a student, under five hundred pounds, in a table” and a full, clear prompt lands in the box. That is think-to-text: you give the order, not the wording.
Press X (or any key or combination you choose) when you want your exact words instead, cleaned up, punctuation in. Speak your own language and Genie 007 writes in the language you choose, which sidesteps the browser language problem. One account covers Windows, Mac and mobile.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Gemini dictation not working?
Gemini dictation stops working when the browser or the Google app has no microphone permission, when the cursor is not in the prompt box, when another app holds the microphone, or when your browser or device language does not match the language you speak. Fix them in that order.
Why does Gemini voice input end too fast or cut off mid-sentence?
Google publishes no cause, only a limit: the phone app microphone stays open for up to five minutes, and no limit is stated for the web. If it stops much sooner, tap Stop then Microphone to pause and resume, close other apps using the mic, and check your input device.
Why does Gemini dictate in the wrong language?
The Gemini web app uses the language set in your browser or device language settings, and Google says that also affects the languages you can talk to Gemini in. Change the browser or device language to the one you speak, then reload. On a Mac, Speak to Window is English only.
Is Gemini voice to text bad, or is it my microphone?
Test it before you blame Gemini. Record a short voice note on the same device and play it back: if it sounds muffled or cuts out, the microphone is the problem. If the note is clear but Gemini still mishears you, check the language setting, close apps that share the mic, and speak in shorter runs.
